چکیده

Communications networks are traditionally used to bring information together. In this paper, we use them to keep information apart in order to protect personal privacy. We show how to implement anonymous credit cards using simple building blocks and standard cryptographic techniques. We propose a systematic method to determine the set of parties that must collude to bring information together. We show that, for the credit card protocol, all parties involved must collude against the customer in order to link her identity with the purchase, unless the store eavesdrops on the customer at the time of purchase, in which case, all but the store must collude.

Collusion in a Multi-party Communication Protocol for Anonymous Credit Cards

We proposed in 8] a novel scheme to implement an anonymous credit card that protects privacy while providing the security, record-keeping and charging mechanism of conventional credit cards. The key idea is to use cryptographic techniques to allow two parties to communicate without knowing each other. In this paper, we present a formal method to study collusion in the multi-party communication ...

Price Ceilings as Focal Points for Tacit Collusion: Evidence from Credit Cards

We test whether a non-binding price ceiling may serve as a focal point for tacit collusion, using data from the credit card market during the 1980s. In our sample, most credit card issuers face a state-level interest rate ceiling, and well over half match their ceiling. We develop an empirical model that can separately identify the instance in which an issuer matches its ceiling because it is b...

Communal Responsibility and the Coexistence of Money and Credit Under Anonymous Matching

Communal responsibility, a medieval institution studied by Greif (2006), supported the use of credit among European merchants in the absence of modern enforcement technologies. This paper shows how this mechanism helps to overcome enforcement problems in anonymous buyer/seller transactions. In a village economy version of the Lagos and Wright (2005) model, agents trading anonymously in decentra...

An Anonymous Credit Card System

Credit cards have many important benefits; however, these same benefits often carry with them many privacy concerns. In particular, the need for users to be able to monitor their own transactions, as well as bank’s need to justify its payment requests from cardholders, entitle the latter to maintain a detailed log of all transactions its credit card customers were involved in. A bank can thus b...
